HIP POCKET THEATRE OPENS 33RD SEASON JUNE 5
PREMIERE OF HOWL BY ALLEN GINSBERG,
DIRECTED BY JOHNNY SIMONS
Hip Pocket Theatre will open the 33rd anniversary season June 5 with Allen Ginsberg's epic poem HOWL - directed by Artistic Director Johnny Simons. Performances will be Friday - Sunday at 9:00 pm, closing June 28. The theatre is located at 1950 Silver Creek Road in Northwest Fort Worth.
Originally published by City Lights Books in the fall of 1956, and subsequently seized by US Customs and the San Francisco police. HOWL was the subject of a long court trial at which a series of poets and professors persuaded the court that the book was not obscene.
The ensemble cast includes Stephanie Cleghorn, Tyler Cochran, Kaite Morrell, Yvonne Duque, Allen Dean, Jeremy Henslee, Richard Rangel, Nikki Hinson, Amanda Merrill, Paul Logsdon, and Grover Coulson*.
Lighting Design is by Nikki DeShea Smith, with costume Design by Diane Simons, and set design by Trent Fullbright.
Director Johnny Simons has had a long affinity with the Beat poets and musicians and that connection has often inspired his original work, as well as creating several plays and adaptations including Kerouac: A Remembrance in 1985 with John Murphy and On the Road by Jack Kerouac in 2001.
This play is rated PG-13 for language.
The gates open at 7:00 pm with pre-show live music by area musicians, and fresh summer fare catered by the Z Cafe in the newly-renovated Backyard space.
